Manchester City Council are proposing to turn the top North West corner of Heaton Park (the corner of St Margarets Road and Bury Old Road) into a “Sports Zone” with football pitches, tennis courts and a skate park. The plans include a club facility and a small new car park. Although community groups would be able to use the facilities free OFF PEAK, at peak times you would need to pay to use the facilities.
Whilst new sport and leisure facilities are a good idea, many local people are opposed to the plans to place them in Heaton Park.
- it takes away a beautiful piece of open parkland, which will be lost forever.
- people are worried about the traffic and parking on St Margaret’s Road and nearby roads.
If you agree please sign our online petition to Manchester Council.

We the undersigned are opposed to the proposal to create a private use “Sports Zone” at the St Margaret’s entrance to Heaton Park. We welcome new sports and leasure facilities, but not taking up public parkland!

This beautiful photograph appears to demonstrate that early in the morning of Sunday 5th April 2009, this portion of the park was totally unused.
I am a regular user of the park and, in truth, this area serves only two purposes:
1) walking
2) wasking the dog
Given the dearth of public sporting facilities in the area this private initiative seems to me to provide facilities which should be offered by Bury MBC. In this age of (reported) obesity and inactivity, I am amazed that any councillor would seek to oppose the proposition. Unless, of course, Bury MBC can find/fund an alternative venue?
